WHAT IS THIS THING CALLED YOLK?

Yolk was founded in basel, switzerland in 1991. we could be regarded as a
progressive rock band, but more in the sense of 70ies prog, when bands like king
crimson and gentle giant searched for new territories, broke rules and experimented
with different styles and sounds. this means we have nothing in common with most of
the neo-proggers today. we also bring in a sense of humour which to some people is
slightly embarrassing, haha. we surely don't care about trends. our style is always
influenced by the tastes of our band members, like in our current line-up:

beat burkhard (*1969, bass, stick): he expands the role of the bass guitar by playing
unusual lines and different kinds of sounds. if there is a weird noise, it's mostly
the bass guitar. he likes gong, king crimson, yes/chris squire, beer, syd barrett,
lucky luke, theremins, jim o'rourke, reggae, candy, eric satie, can, augustus pablo,
nestor burma, contemp. classical music, the rolling stones, john cage. he has two
daughters. he hates US politics and the strokes.

remy sträuli (*1974, drums, voc, key): he is our pop-pig, probably the biggest
beatles fan on earth, furthermore xtc, blur, the who, syd b., kinks, elo. on the
proggy side he loves the old heroes: yes, jethro tull, elp, gentle giant, canterbury
scene, king crimson, genesis, monty python - it's mainly british stuff! Only few
americans find their way into remy's heart: velvet underground, frank zappa, beach
boys, bob dylan, ah and yes, he likes the strokes very much. favourite animal: cat.

jaro milko (*1978, guitar): our newest member brings in some great vintage guitar
sounds. enter the big jimi hendrix fan and a great lover of everything which
confuses the brain: magma, sonic youth, neu!, all projects with mike patton, the
pictures of mc escher, dave "fuze" fuczinsky, but also beer, bad movies, the doors,
zwetschgenkneedl, skating, dogs, surfing on the guitar (trashmen, dick dale,
shadows...). his guitar teacher was willi riechsteiner, Yolk guitarist until 1999!
current favourite band: the strokes.

stef strittmatter (*1976, guitar, vocals): despite his extremely good looks, he is
only a part-time member to Yolk. He can be heard on Yolks tribute to syd barret,
where he contributed bluesy guitar licks and vocals with missing "t"s at the end of words.
When we do not force him to work with us, he plays in even less famous bands and listens
to his complete collections of zappa and status quo, but also to selected works by xtc,
radiohead, elvis costello, the flaming lips and king crimson. he has never listened to
the strokes and is damn proud of it.

all those influences equals the energetic Yolk sound. it's a strange kind of rock'n
roll, pomp in a garage, treated with dissonant sounds, odd time signatures, weird
humour but always friendly. deep in our hearts we are hippies and stand in for love
and peace.
